- SIMPLIFYING CD MAX (SCDMAX) does just that--it simplifies integrating
- CDs into Maximus 3.0 BBSes. It'll search your CD for FILES.BBS (or some
- other file name that contains file listing descriptions) and create the
- FILEAREA.CTL (optional namimg available) into a designated directory.
- It'll then copy the FILES.BBS into another designated directory, with the
- name of FILE####.BBS, where #### is the File Area Number (the FIRST Area
- Number set by you). Along the way of copying, it'll put the descriptions
- on a single line (length set by you up to 1024), if you desire. It'll
- make make multi-lined descriptions from single-lined descriptions, if you
- desire. It'll also optionally remove the SIZE and DATE, if you desire.
- Better yet, it'll ADD the SIZE and DATE to those file descriptions lacking
- them, if desired. It'll let you pick the ACCESS LEVEL for the CD. It'll
- even prompt you for File Area Descriptions as the CD is being processed,
- if you desire.
-
- After SCDMAX has processed a CD, all you have to do is use your
- favorite text editor and merge the newly created FILEAREA.CTL (hopefully
- you picked a different name for this file) into the FILEAREA.CTL in your
- MAX subdirectory. Of course, the DESC line of each File Area should be
- edited, if not done while the CD was being processed, especially when the
- CD has directory with such informative names of "DIR01", "DIR02", etc.
- This will be the hardest job of adding new CD's to your On-line
- Collection. The DESC line will contain the subdirectory name until you
- edit it. (HINT: Use the "Include" line in the FILEAREA.CTL to include the
- newly created *.CTL file.) Be sure to run SILT(p) and FB(P) to include
- the new areas.
-
- If you have a lot of CDs and rotate them, simply keep the *.CTL and
- all FILE####.BBS for each CD in a separate compressed file. When it's
- time to use that CD on-line, uncompress the compressed files and merge the
- *.CTL file into the FILEAREA.CTL file, SILT(p) and FB(p) and you'll have
- that CD on-line in minutes. If it's a new CD, it may take a few minutes
- more to edit the FILEINFO line.
-
- To use, simply put SCDMAX.EXE and SCDMAX.CFG in the same directory.
- Edit SCDMAX.CFG to your needs. Run SCDMAX and it'll do the rest. *IF*
- you don't wish to edit the .CFG file, you can override the setting while
- running the program. The Settings Window will automatically appear each
- time you start SCDMAX, allowing you to modify ALL settings. Of course, to
- make permanent changes, you must edit the .CFG manually.
-
- As with all software that you use for the first, be sure to backup
- ALL important MAXIMUS DATA files. SCDMAX *does not* normally use ANY
- Maximus *.CTL files UNLESS you have specified them somewhere along the
- line. Therefore, please backup before you begin using SCDMAX.
-
- For further information regarding the various settings and configur-
- ation options, please see SCDMAX.CFG. I've tried to explain the settings
- available in that file.
-
- This is an upgrade of SCDMAX to incorporate a few more features and
- make the files compatible with Maximus 3.0. I hope that I've found most
- of the bugs, but I know I haven't. Ideas for future versions (if any)
- are welcomed. If you have any suggestions, comments, complaints or
- whatevers, I can be reached at:

- COST:
-
- This is my FIRST venture and since I want to make my millions before
- I'm 30, I want $100,000.00 for every copy of this program used. However,
- since I've over 30 and never did get any where near a million dollars,
- I'll settle for a note from you telling me that you found some value in
- the program. If that's asking too much, I'll settle for a whispered
- "Thank you" every once in awhile when using SCDMAX. If that's still too
- much, just enjoy it and don't worry.
-
- DISCLAIMER:
-
- There is NO WARRANTY either expressed or implied. Every reasonable
- effort has been made to see that this program performs as described, but
- it is not guaranteed to do anything. In any event, I will not be held
- responsible for any damage that SCDMAX may allegedly cause or any lack of
- performance. Use SCDMAX at your own risk.
-
- I've tried SCDMAX on many different CDs and with various options set
- and haven't discovered any bugs. However, I'm sure certain CDs with
- certain options set *might* give unexpected results. I apologize for
- this. My recommendation would be to try it again with some other options
- set. For example, if option is set to FALSE, try setting it to TRUE and
- see what happens. Good luck!
-
- KNOWN BUGS:
-
- Certain structures of FILES.BBS may cause problems. I've tried to
- account for many of the different structures, but some may cause problems.
- Also, I know of ONE CD (Aminet) that crashes the program. It seems that
- one of the FILES.BBS has a huge number of files and crashes (Error 14).
- I'm hoping that I'll be able to get a copy of the FILES.BBS to see exactly
- where the problem exists.
-
- Another problem I have been informed of is that if the direcotry on
- the CD-ROM has two "FILES.BBS" in it, SCDMAX will find both and throw the
- FILE####.BBS off. I'm looking into this problem too.
-
- As far as I know, these are the only *known* bugs. Please inform me
- if you come across any more. Thank you!
-
- HISTORY:
- 1.0 Initial Release (SCDMAX01.ZIP)
-
- 1.1 Added options verification *after* pressing <F10> to
- accept option. Release 1.0 assumed you had passed thru
- each option prior to pressing <F10> (SCDMAX02.ZIP)
-
- 1.2 No such animal.
-
- 1.3 Added many options for configuring FILES.BBS. Made it
- compatable with Maximus 3.0. (SCDMAX03.ZIP)
-
- 1.4 Bug-fix release: Prompt for Description corrected
- Added "|" when creating Multi-Lined
- Descriptions. It didn't always show up.
- I think it will now.
-
- 1.5 Changed the FILES###.BBS to FILE####.BBS so BBSes with more
- than 9 CD-ROMs can use an unique "hundreds" place-holder
- (i.e. FILE0100.BBS, FILE0500.BBS, FILE1200.BBS, etc.).
-
- Padded the numbers in FILE####.BBS with leading "0"'s so all
- FILES.BBS will have eight.three names. This allows for better
- directory listing when using a sorted directory.
-
- Added <ALT-X> to SKIP directories when being prompted for
- directory descriptions. This allows you to by-pass directories
- that you do not wish to have on your board without ruining the
- FILES.BBS numbering sequence. It will also, hopefully, allow
- you to skip problem directories that may be hanging SCDMAX.
